Newspaper poll finds readers think public notices belong in newspapers

As we head into fall, it’s interesting to see what our members are asking readers to think about. The News-Item (Shamokin) recently polled its readers on a question that we hope interests everyone who reads Headlines & Deadlines: Should school districts be permitted to post their public notices on their own websites, rather than publish them in the newspaper? 

The numbers are encouraging – 63 percent of readers who responded said no. Yes, people do get it – the issue really is about accountability. The move so heartily urged by local government officials is a recipe for "the buddy system and cronyism run rampant, with no checks and balances," as one reader wisely put it. Check out the other reader comments as well. Have you asked your readers what they think about this issue?

Deadline extended in Philadelphia newspaper deal

Philadelphia Media Network Inc. was set to close on its purchase of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com Tuesday, but ongoing negotiations with five of the papers’ unions delayed closing. The sale date has been extended to noon on Sept. 14.

Barry Fox, Office of Open Records deputy directory and former Patriot-News reporter, dies

Fox worked for the Harrisburg newspaper for 21 years, first reporting municipal news and later pop culture and entertainment. He was instrumental in building the Office of Open Records into an agency advocating government transparency. Fox became a statewide expert on open records, providing Open Records training to government officials and residents across the state.

Office of Open Records rules in favor of newspaper

An appeals officer ruled that the Monessen School District must provide the name of a teacher fired in June to The Valley Independent (Monessen). The paper requested information including the teacher's name, position, compensation, number of years of service and the district's final decision regarding the teacher's discharge.

Pittsburgh fights to keep G-20 arrest reports

An Allegheny County judge orderd the Pittsburgh Police Bureau to turn over the arrest reports from the G-20 summit to the Citizen Police Review Board five months ago. During a hearing last week, the city told the judge that state law prohibits them from turning over the arrest reports to anything other than a criminal justice agency.

A: No. The fee schedule in the revised Right to Know Law – and the RTKL generally – only applies to “financial records” of the courts, not judicial records filed with courts such as complaints or affidavits of probable cause.

Foundation News
Register now for the PNA Foundation's Interactive Approval Program

Last year, the PNA Foundation developed a program that helped newspapers better understand and adapt to the interactive world. After 12 webinars covering everything from social media to search engine optimization, the program's participants achieved PNA Foundation Interactive Approval.

The program is continuing this year and will be offered in six webinars from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays from Sept. 23 to Oct. 28. The sessions will cover topics such as generating and driving traffic, writing for the Web and local online sales. The program is $50 per participating newspaper, and participants can invite as many staff members as they'd like to sit in on the webinars. Each session will include a presentation, a question and answer session and an assignment that will help put into practice what was just learned. In the end, participating websites will be PNA Foundation Interactive Approved.
