| Philadelphia Newspapers revisits tape probe request |
The company last week asked a federal bankruptcy judge to rule on its request to hire Elliott, Greenleaf & Siedzikowski P.C to investigate the unauthorized taping of a meeting in November. The initial request was made in August, but was suspended until Jan. 1.

| MediaNews Group holding company’s reorganization plan approved |
Affiliated Media Inc.’s prepackaged reorganization plan was approved by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge, paving the way for the company to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection six weeks after filing.

| Herald-Standard carrier credited with saving business from fire |
Matt Young of Uniontown was on his normal route when he saw flames coming from the doors of Hudson Catering. He quickly alerted the business’ owners, whose home is adjacent to the business. They credit the fact that they were able to save some of their equipment to Young’s quick thinking.

| Jerry Owens, newspaper lawyer, dies at 51 |
Jerry Owens was the son of Roy Owens, the owner and editor of a small newspaper in St. Mary’s, W.Va. Jerry Owens traveled the world working on high-stakes newspaper acquisition deals, including the purchase of the Chicago Sun-Times in the mid-1990s. He died after a long battle with a rare lung disease.

| Charles McKinley, former PNPA president, dies |
Chas McKinley died Thursday morning in his home. He served as president of the PNPA in 1967 and president of the PNPA Foundation from 1982-88. He and his wife, Marge, owned the Brownsville Telegraph until 1988 when they sold it to Calkins Newspapers. A memorial service is planned for April 10.

Q: An advertiser wants to place a full page ad promoting the sale of official state $2 bills. The bills are similar to the U.S. Mint’s state quarter series but the bills are not government issued and are marketed by a private company. The ad looks like a newspaper article and contains a color image of the $2 bills being sold. The word “advertisement” appears in small print at the bottom of the ad. Are there any issues with accepting this ad?
A: These types of ads raise a number of potential problems that should be considered.

The American Press Institute, in partnership with The Poynter Institute, will host Beyond the Newsroom, a 2.5-day seminar designed to give editors the strategies and tools for harnessing the power of networking and collaboration beyond their newsrooms. The seminar will be held March 22-24 in Reston, Va.

| Advertisers spending more on digital media than print this year |
An annual advertising and marketing study by Outsell found that of the $368 billion marketers plan to spend this year, 32.5 percent will go toward digital and 30.3 will go toward print.

| Google CEO to deliver keynote address at ASNE conference |
The 2010 Ideas Summit, the American Society of News Editors, will be held April 11-14 in Washington, D.C., and will focus on how editors can do their jobs better. The conference will be heavy on digital media information, with the keynote address coming from Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
